Creative Collateral and How to Do It

Well, it has been a tough week… I put in a lot of work. Hours of work actually. I designed a business card, letterhead and envelope. I designed all these items for my old gymnastics gym, the one I trained at in Texas. Some tips I have for anyone attempting to do these things is to set aside time to research the organization you are creating for as well as the manager or owner. You want to get a feel for the organization and the way they run things and how they would want their collateral designed. I know my old coach, the owner, pretty well, so it was super easy to design for him! He is classy, original and consistent. I attempted to put all these things into the documents that I created. I think setting time aside to work on these is vital to time management and not procrastinating. I also believe giving yourself breaks in between to get creativity and ideas flowing is a great idea! You do not want to burn yourself out!

When it comes to creating the collateral, I suggest looking on Pinterest boards for inspiration, which I shared in a recent post! I also believe looking at other examples, just in your own mailbox or your parents mail. I really took into account spacing for my designs. I thought having blank space was the best for me and my work. It all stems back to WHO you are designing for. I was really trying to be consistent in all the designs because a person could potentially get all these items at some point, so making them the same was dire! The business card was important to include all the contact info of the owner of Empire Gymnastics. It is difficult to put EVERYTHING on a business card, therefore use what you need too and if they can get an idea of the organization without saying certain unneeded things on the card, then do that!

It is very important to have harmony between your letterhead and envelope, I actually did the same exact design on both. It is also very smart to do the same font and size for the type. Having everything look the exact same is the goal. Some may think this is unoriginal, however it is very consistent! I included the image of my envelope, I was most happy with how this piece of collateral turned out:)

Don’t be afraid to trash an idea, it is okay. Don’t be scared to give up, but then try again. Don’t be freaked out if it looks funny, keep trying! Don’t be weary of the end result, take it one step at a time!

All the luck to you, but you don’t need that. You got this!
